Moving Boxes Pack with Items

Portable Storage & Self Storage Tips

So you want to declutter your space. Good. But it can be somewhat overwhelming without a bit of a plan. So here are some ideas on how to go about making your space less busy with stuff.

Organize first; buy second

Don’t buy boxes and bins until you have assessed what you need to store and where you want to store it… at home or at our facility. All of those cool bins, boxes and baskets are very alluring, but they won’t do you any good unless they fit the space; make sure they’ll hold what you need them to hold, and function properly for your particular space.

Start by making a list of what you’re storing and then pick the box or bin to fit. You can always add later, but you don’t want a bunch of empty containers cluttering up your home while you figure out where you might use them.

Start small, go slow and steady

Start with spending a few hours organizing one area or space. Do not attempt an entire day organizing everything. Few people have the energy and/or focus to spend 8 hours organizing. You’ll likely become frustrated and less efficient as the day progresses. Starting with an achievable goal is a good way to stay motivated ready to tackle the next space another day.

Don’t put off that which you can do right away

Of course you will need to sort things into categories (e.g., toss, recycle, donate, give to friend, put in storage). But here’s the crucial part: Once you have decided where something is going to go — take it there. Never keep bags for charity or boxes for friends in your home to deliver later. Do it now. Finish the process. Take the bags and boxes out to the trash or recycling immediately. If you’re donating something or giving something to a friend or family member, put the items in your car or make arrangements for dropping them off. You’ve done so much work getting this stuff ready to take out, complete the deal!

Don’t do it alone

Successful decluttering means making decisions about items that have been a part of your life. Sometimes for a very long time. That can be emotional and you don’t have to endure the burden alone. Involve the family; let them help you make decisions on what should stay and what should go. In the end, there’s a lot of satisfaction in living a less cluttered life.
